DriveTrain Your typical drivetrain components consist of front and rear drive axles, transfer case 4wheel drive models, and transmission. Proper maintenance is key to long lasting drive train components.
Find my basic guide to these in basic maintenance page.
Your transmission common problems. automatic trans only
Hard shifting - Burnt transmission fluid and sticking shifting solenoid assembly
Slipping - low on transmission fluid. Most common if doesnt solve problem possible damage to internal parts requiring repair or rebuilding.
Stuck in one gear no shifting at all- See transmission shop asap damage to internal parts is needed repair or overhaul.
Manual transmission common problems -
Slipping when driving- Burnt clutch and pressure plate requires new clutch assembly
Doesnt want to go into gear grinds- Worn clutch assembly requires replaced
Grinding noise when shifting gears- Worn transmission parts requires transmission overhaul.
Pops out of gear when driving - Worn gears and execessive play in transmission requires trans overhaul
Noisey when pressing clutch in and out - worn throwout bearing requires new clutch assembly for correct fix
Clutch pedal spongy not drops to floor- air or leakage in hydralic clutch system master cylinder, slave cylinder also worn clutch and cause spongy pedal.
Rear and Front axle common problems-
Roaring noise when driving normally changes pitch when turning call side to side- axle bearings worn or damaged also damage axle gears requires rebuild of axle.
Clunking when shifting forward or reverse- possible u-joints worn in driveshaft. ujoints replaced. Worn ujoints can cause vibration also.
