Check Engine Light

Check Engine Light

Ok that red light in the gauges that reads either service engine soon or check engine or some times its looks like a picture of a engine. Dont get it confused with any maintainance lights either. Only reason for that light is for emissions only. Yes many people can argue over this but thats it. Whether your engine is running fine or not that light means its not doing its job to keep the emissions or epa standards up to date of it being built. If your engine is running fine and the light comes most likely a evap system leak. Meaning your gasoline in your car does evaporate and these gases are reused and stored later for reburning in your engine. So when these gases or evaporated gasoline escape the car's computer or pcm can sense this which in turn causes the check engine light to come on.

Even leaving a loose gas cap can cause the light to come on because your gas cap is a seal too to hold in the evaporative gasoline gases. Also known as hydrocarbons to any epa people out there. Which unburnt hydrocarbons leads to smog other bad airborne particles.
To check these codes you will a scanner or have you local reliable auto shop check out. Certain states wont let your renew your license plate if your car doesnt pass emissions.
If you attempt to repair this problem yourself please refer to a repair manual for further diagnosing. Any cheap scanner you can pick up at the local auto parts store. But you must also no how to use it as well. Alot of people read the codes making the check engine light come on and assume its the part thats bad. In some cases it its but the most times its is just the area to start diagnosing in. Lot of technicians are too lazy to follow through with their repair and throw parts at the problem. Which can get expensive and not to mention mad customers if the problem is not fixed the first time.
